CareerSource Palm Beach County Offers Job Search Tips for Graduates

West Palm Beach, Fla. (May 15, 2019) – With thousands of Palm Beach County college and high school seniors getting ready to complete their education at the end of the month, CareerSource Palm Beach County is ready to help you plan and begin your search for employment.

“The good news is that there are more jobs openings in Palm Beach County for graduates than there are unemployed,” said Steve Craig, president and chief executive officer of CareerSource Palm Beach County, the nonprofit organization chartered by the state to lead workforce development in the county. Last month, Palm Beach County added nearly 16,000 jobs over the year and there were more than 30,000 advertised jobs available.

Besides the improving job market, retiring Baby Boomers are vacating jobs faster than young workers can replace them, especially in occupations such as health care, skilled trades and manufacturing. With some 10,000 Baby Boomers turning 65 years old every day, employers are looking to replace this talent with Millennials and Gen-Z graduates.

With these encouraging developments, follow these helpful job search tips for graduates:

Tip #1 - Start now! Visit CareerSource Palm Beach County’s website,, to start looking for jobs and to get more information about programs and services, including hiring events. You can also visit any of CareerSource’s three career centers in Palm Beach County.

Register in the EmployFlorida database at to search for jobs throughout Florida. You can search for businesses that are hiring and the types of job openings available. You can also set up a dashboard and job alerts that are texted to your phone.  

Tip #2 – Audit everything. Find out as much as possible about employers you are interested in. You can learn a lot about the company from their website, employee reviews and social media. Search for people you know who are linked to the company before you apply. Before sending out your resume, review your social media pages, your email signature, voicemail message and how you appear on Google. Remove images and messages that may make you appear unprofessional and update your Linkedin profile to reflect your most recent experience.

Tip #3 – Stand out. Resumes from graduates with new degrees look alike to employers, so be sure yours stands out from the rest. List internships, summer jobs, part-time jobs, community service projects and campus activities. How do they relate to your major and/or what experience did you gain that helps prepare you for your new career? Include marketable skills such as computer and software knowledge, and additional languages spoken. Your email address should be professional. Employers are interested in work-related references. Tip #4 – Be productive. Searching for your first job is an important process. Treat your job search like a job and you will see better results. Remember to stay positive and get a good night’s rest each night so that there will be no mistakes in your applications and cover letters the next day.

Tip #5 – Dress for success. Transition your wardrobe from casual classroom attire to a working professional look.  Wear clean, pressed, well-fitting slacks and dress shirts, or business dresses/skirts and tops with comfortable but sensible shoes when meeting employers.

Tip #6 – Make a great impression. Job interviews are no place for Improv -- actors rehearse and athletes train for success, and so should you! Appear confident and relaxed by planning and rehearsing your responses to common interview questions. Practice in front of the mirror or ask a friend or family member to play the interviewer.

Tip #7 – Ask questions. Develop at least two probing questions for the interviewer. Each question should help you learn how you can be successful in the position, help you understand the role you would play in the company and find out if the company has the right environment for you. Listen carefully to responses and identify opportunities for a follow-up question.

Tip #8 – Follow up! After the interview, always send a thank you email. This demonstrates that you are eager to work and that you appreciate that the interviewer was willing to invest time away from their business to talk with you. You may want to post a positive message on social media about the experience. Ask the interviewer when he or she expects to make a hiring decision, and be sure to follow up to see if the job remains open or if other positions are available.

Tip #9 – Persistence pays. Take advantage of networking opportunities to make new connections and nurture current ones. Meeting new people at networking events and alumni functions can lead to interviews, jobs leads and references. Stay connected with your classmates, professors and past employers. You never know who may be the connection to your next opportunity!
